Tony your drawings show that if both 2 way switches are switched active the the intermeadiated switch becomes obsolite, ie it does not switch either on or off
 
The picture with five switches does seem to work, I did have my switch wires coming to the center one. When I did it my circuit worked till one switch was in the wrong position, I'm sure it wasn't just a case of say common being in L1
 
There are 37 combinations with 5 switches, 33554454 with 24 switches. I'm not drawing them all out to prove it to you!

Just looked at intermeadiate change over contact positions and yes you are correct Tony
good job my plant designs are always in singles...lol
 
This works for all combinations ie 8 switch combinations per diagram (2 to the power of 3 per diagram)

It may not suit peoples conventions but it works
