Hi guys, I've been in the commercial side of things for god knows how long now as QS for the company I worked for, however I have now changed jobs and am more involved in domestic and residential, I have my NICEIC assessment in December and was looking for some guidance on the most effective way to carry out periodics on domestic properties lived in and empty properties.

any help would be appreciated.

thanks

Honestly mate the key to periodics, so long as you know your way round a tester, no matter what sector, is a fundamental knowledge of the regs. That's it really.

If you haven't picked up a BGB for some time (not that I'm assuming this is the case) or simply your regs knowledge isn't top notch, I'd advise using your BGB for bed time reading. Front to back three or four times and you'll be ready.

If on the other hand your regs knowledge is up to scratch then there's not a great deal of difference between domestic periodics and commercial ones, the only difference being having to scrape around students dirty underwear to get to hidden socket outlets buried under years of accumulated crap in squat like conditions.

Think of it this way... The regs are the same regardless of whether you're in a house, a shop or a factory :)

Have a good line of communication with the residents. Tell them from the start that you are going to cut off power to their house and therefore they cant watch re-runs of Top Gear on Dave tv. Their internet will mysteriously stop working and their world as they know it will come to a complete stop for a day.
