P

Presto

Hi everyone, I'm new on here so thought I'd start by asking for your experiences on rated people.com? I've had nothing but grief - total waste of time. Seems the general public are still more than happy for cowboy DIY man to do it for less than half of somebody with proper qualifications like me? The only people making money are in fact ratedpeople.com - keep away I reckon!!

I went to my first rated people lead the other day. Not even gonna provide a quote for it.
Was to install a fire alarm system at a dental surgery. I asked to see the distribution board to puzzled looks.
"Why would you want to see that ?"
to check bonding is in place and see where I will be taking my power circuit from.
"Well the other guys didn't ask."
Which other guys ?
"well we have had 2 quotes already"

Unreal !

Turns out their DB is in the basement which is a bar, and inaccessible during the day.
Oh and the job needs to be done evenings and weekends to avoid disturbing the patients.
Oh and we are in a recession and the dentists wife has just had a baby so can i keep it cheap.
Oh and the fire officers report says an L3 system but we want it cheap so the other guys have quoted for an L4 system.
Oh and its a listed building so you cant chase the walls or damage any skirting, dado or coving.

The only other leads in my area in the last 2 weeks have been to change single light fittings in houses.
Definitely giving it the heave before the free trial even ends I reckon.

I subcontract for a maintenance company in london, and the bulk of our work is through rated people. we normally get most jobs at £65 + vat for first hour, plus £45 + vat for any additional hours.

Horses for courses I guess ;0))

Bottom line is the punters dont have to pay a thing. Your the guy who ends up out of pocket.
4 bedroom property requires full re wire. Budget, under £1000. Price for lead £35.
And somebody is gonna do it.
But not me boys, I have a little bit more self respect, and hope I will never be that desperate.

Yep totally agree I just do small electrical repairs mainly for rented properties and it worth it to me and it suits my business thing is these companies can be started by a kid in a bedroom and if it fails then no big deal but if it flies then millionare time. Still get one phone call everyother week by some middleman company I am lucky because I spot the sales pitch in the first sentance

Yep its called experience OT. Theres no substitute for it.

I have used service magic before what I found was a load of time wasters eg quote fot rewire in 2 years time etc I got some great jobs of there and went in higher to allow for timewasters, found I won 80% of the REAL jobs. The timewasters I just sent a email with list of reasons why they were not real jobs I got 4 out of 5 refunded.

look at this job just posted , one of the crap wtf ones lol
