Hi all,

I am looking at buying a decent drill that can cope with everyday drilling tasks such as drilling through brick, metal and wood would it be better buying an sds drill rather then a combi drill to do these tasks? I've used the- Bosch GBH36V-LiCP 2.9kg 1.3Ah Li-Ion Cordless SDS Plus Drill 36V when i worked as a satellite engineer and never had any problems but having seen the -Bosch GSB36VE2Li 36V Cordless li-ion Professional Combi Drill I'm not sure which one to go with?
Cheers

Would state each drill has its purpose....bosh gbh sds great for drilling through walls etc. Heavy drill....makita 451 or new 458 great for quick panel installs...light weight....then an impact drill, quick and easy screwing. IMO having all 3 makes like on site, a lot easier.

I agree with Tazz. Having the right drill for the job is pretty much essential.

I have an SDS, combi and drill driver. You could get away with just an SDS and normal drill though (combi or drill driver), but I couldn't imagine trying to drill through a brick wall with a combi or drilling out lots of small holes in wood or metal with an SDS so you really do need both.

Make sure you shop around before buying from screwfix. Bought a Bosch driver from them a few years ago as it was about the same price as on online. Got it home, the box showed 2 batteries but it only came with 1- they'd removed the other. To be fair, the catalogue did state 1 battery where as online it would have come with 2. Just make sure your comparing like for like...!

Battery SDS is a godsend. In the process of upgrading all my makita stuff to brushless now, batteries seem to last forever in the combi! I would not be without my trusty old hitachi impact driver tho, 4 years old 14.4v and still has more guts than the 18v makita one!

I've got all bosch 18v kit, the 4ah lasts for at least 2 days of constant 1st fixing. My opinion get an sds for masonry as its faster and gives less user fatigue. A combi for holes in wood they can do floor bungs at a push. The best tool though is an Impact driver these thing bash screws into anything, no blowback to the user so no broken wrist. My stuffs all bosh blue and I've used it daily for 2 years now and no issues. I've got a little 10.8 combi for fuseboards, light pendants, fans and generally 2nd fix tasks. Invest in a good power tool and your life becomes a lot easier.

there are quite a few different models of 18v makita stuff that is still called lxt

I went a bit nuts on tools last pay day, got myself a 36v makita big drill, then the 6 piece set. I already had the makita impact driver and combi drill from when I started my apprenticeship 3 years ago, but they are looking a bit sorry for themselves now and have the old style batteries that have problems charging some times. So anyone who works with me I tell them to use the old ones, well...they have no choice because all my nice tools are locked away in a van vault and only I have the key :)
