I've just finished 1st fix on a kitchen lighting rewire with a few socket removals and changes.
The property is modern so has dot and dab walls.
We've cut neat chases down where we need to and clipped the cables for the plasterer to fill in.
The couple have just had a kitchen guy in to quote for fitting and he said that all the cables MUST be in capping and if there not when they try to sell there house the mortgage surveyor will "fail the electrics" , it took me an hour to stop laughing, honestly where do these clowns get there info !!!

Capping is not in the regs for cable protection, its there for the safety of the cable and the plasterer (cables come first of course!)

These kitchen fitters, actually is always the ******* kitchen fitters, just because they can measure and cut abit of work top and are team leaders at B&Q lol, fortunately haven't bumped into any of these just yet but have heard all too well

the building could be as old as the hills.....its the age of the install that counts.....and the earthing arrangements of course

Well if this installation is to be suitable to 17th edition standards i'd like to know if it's protected by a RCD thats all.

A bit harsh that!! I've seen many a crap job by electricians with many years experience and some great jobs by the kitchen fitters/builders (Electrical Trainee's).

A crap install is a crap install regardless of who is responsible for the installation and bad advice is bad advice regardless of who it came from.

If clearance of 50mm from the surface cannot be achieved capping should be used along with being rcd protected
