An assessment route that enables experienced workers to qualify to Level 3 NVQ standard has been launched by the JIB.
Designed for mature candidates who have been working in the electrotechnical industry for a number of years, the new programme means that those who successfully complete the assessment will be eligible to apply to the JIB for an Installation Electrician ‘gold’ card under the Electrotechnical Certification Scheme (ECS)..
Operatives who apply will go through a professional interview with a specialist assessor, where their industry experience and existing qualifications will be taken into account. If they have suitable experience, they will then have an assessment programme developed for them that allows them to demonstrate their knowledge.
As part of the assessment programme, the candidate will sit the industry benchmark AM2 test, which is the independent assessment of occupational competence, provided by NET (National Electrotechnical Training).
Candidates will have typically completed the relevant electrotechnical theory training and must be able to provide sufficient evidence from site and by witness testimony of previous work.
“With this new assessment route we’re helping electricians who have many years’ industry experience and technical qualifications, but have so far been unable to be formally recognised at NVQ level,” said David Thomas of the JIB.
“Now, these people can not only have their skills properly accredited, but also gain access to a gold Electrician ECS card in order to open up more work opportunities and demonstrate their competence to the industry Level 3 standard.”

I think it's great news for all those blokes out there who on paper aren't electricians... It's definetly a step in the right direction from the JIB I just hope the assessment program is detailed and people don't slip through who shouldn't

I wanted a gold card for jobs, and so no-one could say I wasn't a proper electrician (especially when many had one, were incompetent and still couldn't find their backsides with both hands.) So even though I had regs, 2391-10 etc I went back to college and did my 2330 and 2356 etc.

Still learn't a lot even though course was basic I am better for it. I feel it is important for commercial and industrial work so I can prove competence coupled with experience.

Got mine already, great idea for the generation of sparks that didn't do/need the nvq 3, as long as people who don't deserve gold cards don't slip through the net then it's a win win

Will have to look into this, last time I tried for a Gold card I was called 'lazy and couldn't be bothered to get the NVQ' by the extremely helpful JIB. Couldn't really help not getting an apprenticeship during a recession out in the sticks but having done about everything over the last ~7 years and knowing more than most of the gold card sparks I work with I would of thought a route fairer than 'go study jib approved course 23-something costing £2500+ for 12-14 months and good luck getting our assessor around to see your work' should exist

Call me pessimistic but i'm willing to bet this will be more money making scheme than anything else

I got mine and I trained early eightiees, I also got my NVQ3, I don't understand how post 1980 sparks don't have the same TBH

I started my training in 82 nvq's and AM's didn't exist

Did they mention that you have to pay for the interview, it makes me wonder if, as Fin said, some ones just making money.

So did I and they did exist, I have my am1 and am2, sorry but you are wrong there. Regarding the NVQ3, if you have the 236 parts 1 and 2 and the am1 and am2, then you automatically qualify to get it.

This is good news just hope standards don't drop as many have said.
Bit of a disappointment for me as i have just completed my nvq3 and paid over £1000 just to get a gold card. oh well you never regret getting any qualifications

Nope not at my college.
Only C&G's AM's came in a few years after I never took them

I've heard the cost of doing the am2 is around £500-£800 plus the costs of the interview /assessment and your still looking at the equivalent of providing evidence of work done at what total cost? ??
This would have to be done over a period of time ie not a quick route for anyone who has the necessary info /evidence etc

How is this preferable to doing an NVQ?

Someone without an NVQ would be better off doing one as they would at least have a recognised qualification for their money/efforts
"and the Gold card" rather than just the card itself! .

This sounds like a good idea, and there seem to be a lot of people who haven't got a gold card simply because they didn't get round to filling in an NVQ3 diary, but on the other hand the 2393 'part p qualification' sounded like a good idea for electricians who had learned everything on the job but needed a bit of paper for scheme registration, and we all know how that has been abused...

I qualified before all these NVQ's are you suggesting I should now spend some money to line someone's pocket to tell me I'm qualified

The system has flaws but this is the baseline they have.
If you qualified before the Nvq system there are exemptions for this

This scheme is meant for people like myself who qualified after but don't have the Nvq , my point is that this new way will probably be more expensive to do and you only have a card to show for your money, doing an Nvq you would be adding a qualification which is never a bad thing.

i fall right in that category, anyone know what the cost will be as i registered and paid £150+vat, for the NVQ and now going to pay the £600+vat for the NVQ, is this now the route to go or the JIB route?

Cheers
Grand

hmm. i have got my lvl one 2330, and lvl 2+3 2365 and 17th edition. im getting my testing 2394,5 around December. anyone here have any recommendations on my next to get fully qualified?

Well I hear the JIB have a new assessment route, that should allow you to sneak in under radar and complete the AM2 and NVQ3(equivalent) in no time and you will be a gold card holder approved electrician!!
