Hi Guys and Gals

Just wondered if anyone out there had undertaken the 17th edition online course? I am currently in employment as a sub contractor and cant afford to take the time off work but need to get this done! I have stumbled across a company called Trade Skills ltd who have actually have an online version of the course available and they will actually send a trainer (with the exam on the laptop) out to me whether that be my home, workplace or local library rather than have to travel to the centre when im ready for my exam?!

To add to this there is no time limit, so i can take as long or as short time as i want.

Just wondered if anybody has actually partaken in this course and whether it is actually as convenient as it sounds?

Any info would be very muchly appreciated as i am looking to book this asap, Have just noticed the NICEIC do a version but it is more expensive and you actually have to travel to a centre!

Well I would ask why on earth you would pay £365 plus VAT for an online course with an open-book multiple choice exam?

Read the book, get to know the layout and section sequence, remember where Max Zs and disconnection times are, nothing is hidden!

^ agreed

Find yourself a centre that will take 'home study' candidates, book in, and do the exam when YOU are ready.

Loads of material on this forum with past exam papers questions etc etc

As it's an open book exam, & I have the regs books etc on my laptop, can I take that in?

No, you can take yor own 'hard' copy of BS7671:2008 or the centre will usually provide a copy, you can't take a computer or any programmable media.

i did my 17th with virtual college via the nic. they send u a lush book that goes into it in too much detail. However, I did it in my own time, did the online practice test, then went to a test centre and sat the exam and passed.

However, I like the advice given above. Read the book and pay for the test. It's about £30 odd quid I think, and if you fail, go home, read a bit more and then re-book. Far cheaper than the £400 I paid.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for but Learning Lounge is a good option for learning at your own pace in your own time and it's cheap. It'll also be very useful for the amendment 1 updates.
A year's subs will cost about the same as a couple of books. More info and a discount from this link on my blog- Electrical Online Training for Electricians. Good luck.

Although NICEIC course is short you get to use your meter and carry out actual testing on a board. At the end you get to sit for a written test and prove your expertise in electrical testing. You need to pass both to get the certificate.

The course you have mentioned may be suitable for an electrician looking to move on to 17th edition.

Choose wisely!

I Mused the Electa home course to swat up on at home....were £185 though i know that.think was £40...it was software that gave me loads of information on things i need to learn and be aware of plus whole load of theroy stuff...was great helped me lots, also gave a program that runs teh 17th exam so you can pratise, its same user interface as one in college too so helps you get head around using the program interface if your not too computer minded....that buys you time in exam......So i got this studied hard at home alone with Regs book OSG for a month the nwent and done exam in college....i still done the 3 day coarse which i felt was really valuable if your a bit rusty........

DONT forget NEW BOOK very soon, for updates so wouldnt go buy one just yet !

I know what you mean Goody. You need to be careful to spend your money on something that gives you what you need. Especially when it's £100 or more. Learning Lounge is more of a collection of training modules rather than a course with an exam at the end. It's not the same as getting the hands on practical stuff as you would at college but they are introducing a 'simulator' for some of the modules which will be interesting. You can take mock exams and assess your progress to test your knowledge which is good for revising which is useful. Other courses like the NIC one give you everything including the exam and qualification that's why they cost a lot more.

Things like this will never replace the books and guides but I think it's very good value and gives access to most topics relevant to electricians and trainees. When I think about how much I've spent on guides over the years only for some of the info to be out of date after a few years. I think anything that gives instant access to information is a good thing. That's mainly why I started my blog. A couple of years ago there was nothing like this online.
