Hi all!
Just wired my first 3phase compressor and got it to run the right way'
The customer then wanted to move the compressor to another premises with only a single phase supply! He asked can it be done?
I answered "......Erm I think so"
Help!
The compressor is 3phase and earth. Without quoting voltage or power ratings is it not possible as there is no neutral? Thanks.

So u want to run a 3 phase machine on a single phase supply and your said u think it can be done? Can u explain how u think that could be done

3 phase is 3 single phases... Each phase will pull the same amount of power. For example if each core pulled 23a then think how much it would need if it was single phase. With our the n all phase must be balenced

A few weeks ago I saw a spark link all three phases out on a water pump to give it a quick blast before wiring in properly. As I only caught a glimpse of what he was doing I thought he was changing from star to delta as there wasn't a 3phase supply at the time. Go easy I'm still learning.

Unfortunately if we connect all 3 phase winding of the motor together at each and and connect to a single phase supply the motor will sit ther, become very hot and destroy the winding insulation.

The three phases, being 120 degrees apart in phase, produce a rotating magnetic field in the motor windings which, in turn, pulls the rotor around with it thus producing rotation. However, for the magnetic field to interract, there is a slight lag in the rotor known as the 'slip speed'

The easiest way is, yes, single phase supply into a 3 phase inverter driver.

my preferred method would be to replace the motor with a 1Φ motor of the same hp. cost around £150 - £200 for a 3hp. cheaper and easier than a 1 to 3Φ converter.

correct not to mention the fact that if a power supplying the inverter or 3 phase converter is interrupted the feedback from the motor could spike and destroy the convertor or inverter without proper current clamping
