And if you're really stuck a 3/4" screw [or other length lying round in the toolbox] a couple of turns into the centre of the cap followed by pliers on the screw.

I thought that the idea was to try to take them out without damage they are not cheap to buy for what they are.

You can buy packs of these little covers on amazon and at screwfix.

As above, the point of a new Stanley blade gets them out without damage, (and usually flicks them across the room!)

Or under the couch and places never to be seen again...
