Is there a regulation that states you must protect cables passing through walls (i.e. drilled, from one side out to the other), or can you just pass them straight through the wall as I've seen on untold occasions..

Sheathed cables passing through a wall should be installed carefully to ensure they are not damaged by the installation but, so long as the cables are correctly supported on either side, then there is no requirement to protect them as they pass through the wall, through the wall penetration should be sealed.
Non sheathed cables cannot be passed through a wall without protection.
In some cases it may be very much easier to provide a smooth pull way through the wall.

Thanks Rich, makes sense. Is there a reg relating to this? I have had a look but can only find info on running cables inside a wall (i.e stud or cavity, not through).

I can't think of a regulation stating you can place a sheathed cable against a brick, I think it is common sense.
I think I have seen a similar answer to my one above somewhere on a website but I cannot remember where.
