hi guys, as a well established electrical contractor carrying out all types of electrical work we have never undertaken door entry/access works, any tenders that have included this we always have subbied it out.

as we never have undertaken these works we are obviously not as skilled/clued up as specialists would be.

my question is - is there any training courses that can give a good foundation knowledge of these works.

p.s - when we have subbied out in the past we usually do all cable runs etc and connect handsets in the flats.

* also if more info is required at this stage in order to reply sensibly please say so before various members start the hounding comments.

When I worked with doorentry systems wehad training provided by the manufacturers.
TBH all the ones I have worked with have been a doddle from a wiring and installation POV.

The computer/set up side of things though was a bit harder!

Ah I see. Dillb's suggestion is not a bad one. Also try your local electrical wholesaler/alarm wholesaler and see if they ever get offered any courses to dish out to customers.

door access is not too bad.

we do a lot with push buttons, break glases, card readers, maglocks, sherlocks etc.

im sure there are courses on it but i learnt on the job, its quite simple really and they all come with instructions explaining what each core does so easy to figure it out with a set of panel drawings

thanks for reply , i can imagine with everything infront of you it could easily be worked out

Could you not sub it out, but on the understanding you have one of your guys working alongside them to ensure " they are doing it correctly as it's your companies name at risk" and use that as a learning curve?

good shout , always just concentrated on our stuff but now we are looking then think we will do this

There are plenty of manufactures on the market....main leaders are Comelit, Fermax, ESP.
There are a few different system method, 2 wire network..were all video, voice and control are on 2 wires (cat5) with each entry phone having its own address, others are multi core from each entry phone, and last is coax cable for video and multi core to voice control.
Personally I like the 2 wire Comlite, can deal with hundreds of video entry phones, and multi call units

it depends on the system, there are a lot of ways to do it, normally we run ours in beldens and yy's etc.

we tend to install schneider kit

We mainly used Feedback controllers with HID prox sensors, breakglasses, release switches and maglocks.
Always found it to be reliable and versatile kit.

We hooked em up to everything over the years from regular doors to auto doors and even turnstiles.

Always find the best way is to get some kit on the bench and set it up to get some experience with it that way you don't end up looking an idiot on site.
