Hi all,

I converted my gas water heater to electric. I have a two pole pushmatic breaker of 20 amps. I am wanting to connect this to a 40 gallon 4500 watt water heater.

I currently have a 12/2 wire connected, and get 240 volts when read with a multimeter. I wanted to get input before I connected it.

It’s pushmatic, I know it sucks. I would like to upgrade it eventually.

You need a 30 amp double pole breaker for your water heater using 10/2 with ground romex cable. Since it is a pushmatic breaker you will need to contact a local electrical parts supplier to provide you with this breaker. I highly doubt that you will find it in any local Lowes or Home Depot. Good luck and welcome to the forum.
