Well..

Ive had the opportunity to get a job with the national grid for a jointing apprenticeship 15,500 a year start then after 3 years 26,000 a year with the opportunity then to do a engineering degree and become a Senior Authorised Perosn at £60k / Year + car

My question now is, is there that much money in owning your own business... like its going to take me around 6 years to get to the 60k a year bracket and thats IF im clever enough and IF it all goes to plan if not could take longer..

Is there more money in running a business for 6 years if it becomes successful?

Or is it all gambles, a business could earn more BUT then it could also still just stay the same struggle through each year on about 20k a year...?

Cheers guys

you forgot to mention with the job, you get holidays, a pension, company vehicle, and countless other benefits. it's a nightmre trying to get a motgage when you're self-employed. take the job.

Yeah true thats what im thinking doing, take the job and at start do work on a weekend or afternoon dependent on size.. Have a free car! Hopefully be all good will have to wait and see wish me luck!!

Take the job, I'd rather be earning 60k working for someone else than 60k with my own business. Not just reasons that tel mentions but the stress of running your own business, the fact your never really off work etc etc.

£300+ a week while training ain't to be sneezed at.

If you don't want to do it, let me know and I'll do it! :) That's a great opportunity, especially in the current economical climate. Go for it mate.

And honestly with the degree if say if you got a B in maths you'll have no problem, just have to be keen and don't slack. Probably even if you got a C but with hard work and dedication but seriously £60k after 6 years is great

I think you are thinking too much about this. £60K per year and that's on the basis you actually pass the degree and get the job

£15k5 to be an apprentice - I thought you were qualified by some of your prevoius posts

£60K running your own business - we you'd struggle big time to do this as a sole trader and once you employ people you have VAT and all other sorts of issues to face before you can earn a living.

Back in your court matey...

Yah im qualified electrician, this is an apprenticeship to be a cable jointer for national grid rather than an electrician apprenticeship. Then once i complete that i would do an engineering degree through national grid to become a senior authorized person which is anywhere between 60-80k.. With a company car! And thats without overtime.

Reason i have this opportunity is my dad worked as a Senior Authorized Person before he passed away and he was well known through National Grid - So the manager spoke to me

How does the doing degree part work?
Will it be a full time 3 year BEng (Hons) job, and if so, how much will you be paid during that period?
And where would you take this degree? Not all universities are the same!

Personally, I'd go for it.
The thing I like about being employed (on wages/salary), come 5 o'clock or so, out that door and your time's your own and forget about work until next day!

I'd jump at it. When you think about it 3-5 years ain't that long in the grand scheme. I done near on 6 years mechanical engineering degree then left to pay myself £1000 a month, I kick myself very often!
