Discuss Newly bought property - tape on fuse box in the DIY Electrical Advice area at ElectriciansForums.net

Hello,

Just bought a property and have keys. House is 6-7 years old.

The electricity is turned off and the fuse box has tape over it (as does toilets, sink, fires, etc.,) saying do not use.

There are a few plug sockets in one room that was replastered where the socket xcovers are not on, just wires coming out of the wall (taped too).

Is it safe for me to flick the switch in the fuse box to on?

I would also like an electrician to come in and to check that the electrics are all okay. Will he check every socket, etc., or is that not necessary?

One last thing. If I want to add a TV socket or a phone socket to a bedroom, is that for an electrician to do or do I need to get a TV aerial person out?

Sorry for what might souund like daft questions, but first time I've been in this position.

Hi I would look on here for an electrician most are good guys if not all.
Maybe ask neighbour for a recommendation !

your first port of call is a local spark. check the installation and fix any faults before energising. then ask him if he can do, or knows someone, to do the aerial and phone works.

Madness. What did your surveyor say about this before you signed on the dotted line?

Thanks for all the replies. I have contacted an electrician as advised.

@ Murdoch. Not really madness. The house had flood damage prior to me purchasing it. Repair work has been done to a very high standard, but not by me. I bought the house in its current condition after survey.

Ok.

So call a couple of local sparks and ask them to quote for a complete EICR on the property due to water damage (you need to say this so they understand WHY you are requesting the inspection) .... I would want to see the property before submitting a price!

You will need a more detailed inspection than normal as even if its dried out you will want the sockets and switches etc off the walls to determine internal damage

Good luck

And if you add your location you may find a spark or 2 on here local to you.
