Hi all. On a job today noticed that the gray of zone valves was connected with brown and switch from programer for hw and the same with ch. No perm live in joint boxes (1 in loft and 1 in airing cuboard!). May I ask why does the Zone valves require a perm live? Thanks.

Depends what type of system it is i would think. S plan will need a permanent live, Y plan will not - in a y plan iether the call for ch or hw will provide the input. I think.... Obviously those are just the two common systems, there are others out there.

S plan it is. Job was to change the programer. But during a kwik look over the system I noticed they were wired like this. Havent seen them wired like this before.

Having just googled the s plan diagram, all it is doing is getting its supply from the thermostats, not conventional but it would work. Have a look at the diagram and see what you think.

Cheers FAA. Looked like a rough job that made me wonder. Havent spoken with client if there was any previous issues with system. Thanks again.

Having looked at this again, the main difference is that in the configuration you have seen, you are drawing current for the pump through the controller, which may not be designed for such loads, as small as they are, if you were to do this on a larger pump you may well burn out the controller......
