I can already hear the accusations of you being "far too dear"!
What.. wha err. what is it? how does it work where does it go ? Any reading like Zs Ze ???
Hey guy's,
Anyone ever been asked to price up a new db and found this as a main earth?View attachment 33879
Should be a quick board swap though, with only one circuit!
So is that seperate live and neutrals coming in from the supplier? What's the pipe work that it's coming out of? Is it some sort of old TNS set up?

Is possible that is connected from another DNO supply using conduit as earth. This isn't uncommon have seen flats supplied from a shop below in a similar manner.
Sure there ain't a shop below itHey,
It's a bungalow
Same here loads of flats and maisonettes in London are done like this that's why I asked if it was a flat
You might find a shop up there. Earthing systems very often TN-S. If connection to conduit is sound then normally okay. If you say yours may of been overhead then the earth to the conduit may well just be earthing the conduit.
I'm back there in a couple of day's so I'm going to climb up into the loft and trace where it is going

The answer must be up there, keep us posted.
Over head supply.?Hey,
It's a bungalow
looks like that earth cable is just earthing the pipe.those v.i.r. cables dont like being moved after 60 years
Over head supply.?
Even VIR.Please it is VRI.
Over head supply.?
Even VIR.
Its Vulcanised Indian rubber to my KnowledgeVulcanised Rubber Insulation not Vulcanised Insulated Rubber. Tis the rubber which is Vulcanised as insulation.
Its Vulcanised Indian rubber to my Knowledge
Yes this is one term which is incorrect, sometimes referred to as cab tyre. The rubber is vulcanised and used as insulation therefore it is vulcanised rubber insulation, VRI.This is how I know it....
Me too in the 70'sI've always known it as VIR.
I replaced miles of it in the late 60's with PVC singles.
If you google VIR / VRI it comes up about 50 /50.
With a few people insisting it's VRI.
I suspect VRI was the original (sounds a better description) and probably Trademarked or Copyrighted by the first manufacturer.
Then all following manufacturers had to use VIR as the description.
However VIR / VRI refers to singles.
TRS is probably the correct title for VRI /VRI singles within a Rubber sheath.

I've always known it as VIR. Used to be called ' Cab Tyre ' before that.I done abit of Google myself last night and found it to be 50/50. I've only known it as VIR because when I was jointing that's what UKPN called it in their documents.
In all my years never heard that (cab tyre) or vri. Only VIRI've always known it as VIR. Used to be called ' Cab Tyre ' before that.
Well two people recall cab tyre. These things are a bit connected as the black tough rubber sheath on cables was like Indian cab tyre, vulcanised Indian rubber or VIR. VRI is the correct term.In all my years never heard that (cab tyre) or vri. Only VIR
New to me West, learning all the time.Well two people recall cab tyre. These things are a bit connected as the black tough rubber sheath on cables was like Indian cab tyre, vulcanised Indian rubber or VIR. VRI is the correct term.
My old mentor actually called it cab tyre and he explained the Indian cab tyre bit, might be bull but he was right on most things or at least he told me he was.New to me West, learning all the time.
Tel, Pete, Dave ocd ,Spoon, your views please.?
