I know fire rated downlights are installed in false or suspended ceilings as the normal as the cost difference is small...

But what about PIR sensor in a false ceiling or a suspended grid ceiling wouldn't they need to be fire rated if it was a fire rated ceiling?

a suspended ceiling is not a fire barrier. fire rated downlights also are not necessary, but are probably fitted solely because they tend to be of better build quality than non fire rated ones.

It's a good question. Only applies to ceilings that are fire barriers as has been stated, but there are plenty of scenarios that would apply.

I've just had a look online for fire rated PIR sensors. I found a one by JCC, no longer available. And another one that can be made fire rated by buying an add on.
Of course, you could just use a surface mounted PIR sensor, which would not need to be fire rated.

If you surface mount a sensor on a fire rated suspended ceiling the cable will penetrate the barrier which would require fire sealing so the performance of the ceiling is not compromised.
