Ive just purchased on old electrical device tha i believe is battery operated but has a realy on it marker - RES Load 5A - 110VAC or 24VDCC - coil DC 6V.
my question is what should i connect it to to test it, battery or electrial transfomer?

you need 6V d.c. to energise the coil. a transformer puts out a.c.so a 6V battery is the better option.

Fancy posting a picture?
We are a curious bunch here!

Are you powering the whole device, or just powering the relay to test it? Just because the relay is 6V doesn't mean that's what the device/appliance operates on.

Nice bell that. What you've got is a relay which allows a small current to activate the solenoid which operates the bell. So you could have a permanent bell supply, and then trigger it with a lower current.

Out of interest, does a servant arrive when the bell operates? If not then it's faulty :)
