mad frankie

hi can anbody out ther post a diagram for sattelite/cable installations, what cables required how many runs etc.
ive installed this a few times and i keep getting different advice.
anybody got a system which will cover every thing.
regards ian.:confused::)

No such thing as a setup to cover everything, however ... one of the most flexible sat solutions is to go for a quattro (not quad) lnb on your dish and a multiswitch with however many outputs you need.

Just done the neighbours (doing a loft conversion) and installed a 12 port multiswitch. You take the HL, VL, HH, VH feeds and terestrial aerial (possibly mixed with DAB aerial if you need it) into the multiswitch then take however many feeds you need for each room (1 for normal, 2 for sky+ etc). You then use an output plate in that room (triplexed or quad) to peel off the tv, radio and sat signals.

Sorry, it was a bit cryptic :p

LNB's are Low Noise Block (or more acurately Low Noise Block {Down} Converter). That's the lump that sits on the end of the dish's arm. It's function is to reduce in frequency the satellite signal, which is transmitted as a microwave frequency signal to Radio Frequency (RF) that can be transmitted over coaxial cable.

The LNB's usually operate at two different frequency ranges (High Range = H, and Low Range = L) and two different Polarisations are commonly used (Horizontal = H, and Vertial = V (you can also get circular polarization but that's a bit more specialised and not relevant here)). So, to get the full range of channels that could be transmitted the LNB is capable of shifting frequency ranges from high to low and vice versa, on each range the signals can be polarised horizontally or vertically, so you need 4 different combinations to cover the posible signals (Horizontal Low Range = HL, Vertical Low Range = VL, Horizontal High Range = HH and Vertical High Range = VH). Depending on the channel being tuned the receiver will need to switch the LNB to one of the frequency ranges and either Vertial or Horizontal Polarisation.

Single, Dual, Quad and Octo LBS's are commonly used but you are limited to that number of devices (1 for single, 2 for dual, 4 for quad and 8 for octo). With the quattro LNB the 4 ranges are sent on to the multiswitch and the multiswitch is left to do the selection (when instructed by the receiver). So then you can have as many devices as the multiswitch has outputs for. You can also get multiswitches that can handle more than one satellite, say one fixed and one motorized. It is also possible to buy multiswitches that can be cascaded together to increase capacity.

You can buy quattro LNB's and Multiswitches from Screwfix or specialist stores (ie SatelliteSuperStore.co.uk/.com). The multiswitches will typically have 5 (or 9 for dual satellites) inputs (4 base signals per satellite + terestrial TV).

I don't have any diagrams, however the quattro LNB will be marked as per the above post and you simply need to pair them off with the 4 on the multiswitch. You can buy quad satellite cable for this, but if you make your own, keep those leads the same length. The multiswitches will typically have trimmers for adjusting the gain on each base signal (and the TV input). Adding in the TV signal has the advantage of only needing to drop one cable (or two for sky+ into each room) and you then use a triplex or quad output plate for termination ie:
Labgear Screened Outlet Plate Quadruplex - NoLinkingToThis, Where the Trade Buys there are cheaper places around though depending on what you need (do a search once you've decided what you need).

Hope that helps.

Edit: be careful on the choice of dish if you go this route ... it needs to be round (not oval like the sky minidish!).

very interesting and helpful i should now have some idea of what i am doing rather than just running cables where im told to i willl contact some of the above to see if they can supply diagrams thanks again topquark.
