Maybe add a small resistive load to each unit to give the photocell a little assistance.
Danlers make a product called resload for this purpose which is just a resistor bolted to a heat sink (or the resloade which is the same but in an enclosure.

I was thinking of a dummy load aswell but quite expensive and could add 25w to each fitting, so maybe loosing the benifits of the changing to LED in some cases. Obviously different sizes available £22 being th cheapest.

got a job on, a park homes. 9 street lights with obsolete SONs. several failed, either lamps or control gear, and can't get replacements, so decided to go for LED alternative. can fit a E27 base and sourced 40watt LED lamps to fit. problem is that these lamps are not compatible with photocell switching according to supplier's research. anyone know of a solution?
Try this maybe worth giving them a call/email to put mind at rest. Any good wholesaler should be able to get them. I have fitted a corn type LED lamp before after taking out gear what you have to watch is lumen output.

Can't you get hold of the high output Sons? Or go for Son retro fit Metal Halides? These are all still readily available at most places. Might save the grief of having to find a LED Corn Lamp that is compatible with a Photocell and that also doesn't void any warranties.
