Im looking for some advice on getting qualified, C&G or NVQ 3 online theory and workshop practical.

Usually I would agree with you, but in my case I already have the years of experience but no paper work to back it up with.



I have over 12 years of experience with in the electrical sector from servicing, fault finding and repairing systems. 6 years on vehicles and a further 6 with specialist equipment.


Unfortunately I was not able to attend college during that time and currently my Job role at this time will not allow me to take time off. Unless its off as holiday.


Would my only option be to resign and go to college full time ?

I am hoping there would be an option to brush up on the theory on an online course and display my competency or brush up on new technologies in a training centre on my days / weeks off.


Im a field service engineer and work takes me away from home as well as abroad some times a few weeks at a time.

Would you be able to give me a few more details about the course you offer, learning hands on is always the best way.
Yes your right we don’t need to be qualified as electricians, the main thing for my line of work is an understanding of how the systems work as well as knowing how to troubleshoot and fault find.


If I was qualified as an electrician it would open up my job prospects. I have always wanted to be an electrician I guess that’s why all my previous jobs have involved in some way or another involved electricity. It would also open up my prospects of migrating to Australia, I have family out there who I visit and at the moment its the lack of paperwork that’s stopping me.


Unfortunately going to college is not an option for me right now, my job is fairly intense and full on with out much time to do anything else I wouldn’t be able to keep to a routing of 1 or 2 days a week as I never know where I will be from month to month. The only option would be to guess those 6 lucky numbers then I could do college full time :43:

You probably don't want to hear this but I would stay away from online Electrical Courses, the qualification needs to be taught in a classroom/workshop and explained properly by a good lecturer/instructor. It will do you no good trying to learn the Electrical theory from an online software and it may not look so good from a future employer's point of view.

This is something I'm now looking at getting into for several reasons. Online is certainly not the way I want to go though, I've had a little look and seen the c&g 4270, that the right way?

Also, while its still electrics, and works off the same concept as traditional electrics, how much different is it in terms of me learning it?

I'm already qualified in 2330 and 2391 mate, my post was more aimed at going into auto electrics from our back ground rather than going from that into normal electrics.

I am not linked to any training organisation, but I have seen quite a few apprentices over the years.

One route is to do a mechanics course and add the electrical side on to that. The disadvantage to this is if you are working for an auto electrical company then you not do any of the practical for the mech side.

I have found one dedicated AE course in the north of England, in Manchester, where our app has to travel too once a week, from Sandbach.

Another way is to work for a dealer and get sent on one of their courses.

The sad reality is that training for auto electricians is not there because there is no demand for the courses, because large companies do not want single skilled work forces.
