5 amp or 13amp for 1000 watt appliance

Hi all,

Quick question hope someone can shed some light on.

I have a single coil burner with the following labelled specifications;

1000 Watt
220/230v
50/60hz

It comes fitted with a 13 amp fuse, but after reading a short bit about fuses I got the impression it might be too high.
The calculations I came across was 1000w/230v=4.34 and another 1000w/230v=4.34*1.25=5.43
Would a 5 or 10 amp be better suited?

the 13A fuse is to protect the cable to the appliance, not the appliance itself, which is a fixed load, so if the cable is 1.5mm, the 13A fuse is correct. nothing to stop you downrating fuse if you want.

It seems to be a practice from some manufacturers these days to rate the cable for the appliance. For example a 2kw heater will have a 1.0 cable fitted which is rated at 10A but the fuse fitted is 13A. The theory being the nature of the fixed load will not exceed the ccc of the cable and hence the 13A fuse serves little purpose in respect to protecting the cable.

it will give fault protection but maybe not overload protection. either way, for a fixed load, it is compliant.

As far as I’m aware, it’s only 3A and 13A for plug tops.
The other amperage are for FCUs.
I believe the recommendation is 3A for up to 700W, and 13A for above.

I'm sure this is the "pen-pushers" simplifying things.
..De-skilling.. 2 cable thicknesses easily told apart.
( In a more energy efficient world )

What would be the solution for an identical model but with a German plug?
I bought it and never bothered returning it, so thought to add on a adaptor and start using it. Not sure on fuse for that either though.
