Hi was asked to quote on new CU did checks first and 000ohms on neutral - earth on socket ring circuit, checked out and wiring needs replacing.customer still wants me to fit CU as he wants lighting, shower, garage etc to be RCD protected but put house ring on non RCD side in new CU. prob is he can't offered rewire old CU is broke (casing and MCB) what would you guys do and if you carried out job to make what is there safer what would you put on EIC ???? Thanks

You can't, you can only have a circuit on non RCD if it is specialist equipment etc just wondered if there was a way around it? just not to connect it In new board I suppose?

I am just asking !!!! With your years of experience in the job you must of come across this situation a few times? If he can't afford rewire and old cu is damaged what do you do?

True, but is he going accept having no sockets in the house. If you connect on the none RCD bar then you would be just as bad as a DIYer. Some things are best left un touched. Possibly switch all other circuits into a new CU and leave the sockets in the existing until he can afford the circuit to be rewired?

Offer a RCBO board and fit an MCB to the socket circuit, then change it for a RCBO when you've found the fault.

The quote for the job must state clearly that the "revised" installation will not meet the requirements of BS7671

Are you positive the cable is shot and it not some dodgy diy or rusty outside light??

Going back on Friday for another look as he just told me he had kitchen revamped a couple of years ago and old jtn boxes left under floor boards above ? As kitchen fitters moved stuff. It Is old 60s wiring with no earth on light circuits, I know it gets better, but all fittings are class 2

First rule of this job....Never believe it when a customer says they can't afford something. I've fallen for that old chestnut when they are in threadbare clothes, sitting in an old patched sofa, only to find out later that they have more money than I'll ever dream of.

O Ohms N to E -

Did you leave the main switch on during the test?
Was there any gear plugged in during the test?
Was there any extension leads, with surge protectors?

no need to rewire all of the circuit, just find the fault, disconnect from cu and break the ring and have a look where about the fault is. if thats 000ohms on continuity measurement may be a nailed cable or loose/burned wires touching metal back box somewhere

Is it an old rewireable fuse box? If so and your first and primary concern is the broken and dangerous fusebox itself then why not put in a new rewireable fuse box as a like for like replacment? Go back when the customer has more money and trace the fault and so on? Stage work in bits to allow customer to be able to afford it? Just a suggestion. Where there's a will there's a way
