Discuss Is an RCD enough protection? in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

I'm looking to swap out my light fittings from gu4 to gu10 and to do so I have to cut a transformer off and wire the mains into the gu10 fitting. It's an old flat and all I can find within it (in terms of power isolation) is an RCD. Will an RCD device provide enough protection to perform this task? Or do I need to isolate in some other way?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Yes,for isolation purposes it will......but the only way to be sure is to use an approved voltage tester...the two probes type,NOT a neon screwdriver. DONT just assume it's isolated...check it's safe before proceeding.

Confused.

Yes, its fine.

Test before you disconnect to make sure there is no power up there, if not - you're fine to disconnect to your hearts content.

And, the moral of this thread is...wirepuller is a faster typer, lol.

Top man, I'll just quietly put the neon screwdriver in the bin! Other than crushing my hopes of being LED'd up by 8pm tonight, that's sound advice. I've seen enough not to take any chances. Any pointer on VT's? I assume they're off the shelf items?
