refuse it pete. if they offer it for free, then there's got to be some sort of a catch somewhere.

Got a letter today from my energy supplier, saying that they are in the process of installing Smart meters to all of their Customers,
Did you read the smart meter terms and conditions? My supplier hid them behind a maze of links and it was very difficult to get all the information, but after reading them I'd never agree to having a smart meter fitted.

My reply is the same as I posted, nothing to do with good or bad payers

The likelihood of demand outstripping supply in the near future on a regular basis is very possible, rationing of that demand may entail restricting availability either through varying tariffs at different times or even cutting the power to households if the problem becomes severe
What if they are able to change remotely the reading of the meter and charge you whatever they wanted? How we can prove that you haven’t used all that energy?
There won’t be any manual numerical record on the digital smart meter.

refuse ill tell you what the real catch is

why does no one ever mention the real danger of smart meters?

why are the power company spending so much on em?

tip it aint so you can have a silly box on table to tell you how much juice your kettle takes because you cant work out what kwh and how may watts your kettle takes

what the only thing a smart meter can do that is of any use to the electric company

that a normal meter cant

They can do time based charging

when they get enough of em fitted

watch how much peoples bills go up at peek times when there all in house and need the power most and the introduce different rates at different times of the day

that's there plan
The cost of the meter and the install is passed on to the customer via billing, they won't be losing out I can tell you that.

The energy suppliers will already have an idea when peak demands are....takes no working out. There will be a surge in the morning when people get up and make breakfast. Then again around early evening when people come home, make dinner, do washing, put dishwasher on etc.
The only thing I see as being wrong is the way the suppliers portray them as something that is going to save you money
A lot of commercial properties have had “smart” meters for a years now.....is the reason behind smart meters to save on having employ people to go drive around and read them and administration costs of customers submitting their own readings?

I have had EON contact me by phone, letter and email telling my meter is being phased out and must be replaced, none of this is true.
Are you quite sure on that?
The Heatwise tariff is being withdrawn

Are you quite sure on this as the Heatwise tariff is being removed due to Ofgem.

Wouldn't have one - I don't have to. Why? :
1. No idea how secure their data system is, it's a gift to burglars with an inside contact! - and a target for hackers on a grand scale!
2. Load shedding made easy - they can switch you off any time they like.
3. Ideal for variable tariffs - hit you hardest when you need it most!

Why put up with that lot for a fancy gadget that only tells you your total load and consumption - you can buy one for 30 quid!

I think a lot of people on this thread have seen too many X files episodes!
Anyway the smart meter works on a mobile phone SIM card......better get rid of your mobile phones.....the aliens might be listening:alien::alien::alien:

the aliens are already listening. how else would they know that i had PPI and a recent accident?

If you get a smart meter? Be prepared for a larger power bill !
Speak to anyone whom has one,
unless you use little or no power during peak period.

Contact your supplier to have it checked. Radio 4 consumer program (Money Box: BBC Radio 4 - Radio 4 in Four, How smart are smart meters? - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04wqsvv) had a feature on these a while ago. Apparently some of them are wildly inaccurate in their measuring of consumption. In addition, they're still installing previous generation smart meters, 2nd gen aren't finished testing yet, and they're not expected to be ready to install before the latter part of next year. First gen meters turn into dumb meters if you change power provider, you will need either a new meter or a 2nd gen meter for it to continue to be 'smart' when you change from, say, NPower to Eon.

To those saying the power companies will be able to switch us off remotely, I've yet to see a smart meter that is of a size that could contain the equipment necessary to carry out on-load switching safely. I think the suggestion that they'll be able to do such a thing is extremely remote.

extremely remote. just like men landing on the moon. as if.

This is related to the remote switching of appliances,it is however relevant to whether a smart meter is likely to have the facility and the capability of load switching

To meet this challenge, Landis+Gyr have developed the L550 Remote Load Switch, which together with the smart metering solution will enable the utility to disconnect the household load remotely from the smart meter in the street kiosk.

The Remote Load Switch solution is therefore a means for any smart meter that has an auxiliary contact (installed outside the house) to disconnect up to 40 Amp household load/s (situated inside the house)

Yes, the technology exists, I don't reject that it does, but it's not in the smart meters that are currently being deployed and therefore is not something to cause concern for UK consumers at this time.

Got to poke at a
Secure ,Liberty 110. Pre pay
(eco-7 capable?)
Nearly as many buttons as a cashpoint !
... Capable of disconnecting supply for
"over-current" situations as well .
--person was using OVO for energy--
( earlier instructions had *# ,I had A B)

I know of one Private company which is constructing 42 mini power stations around the U.K. intending to sell the electricity they produce to the National grid.
I am sure there are others.
No doubt they'll be using diesel generators running on cheap fuel that the oil companies have got to get rid of somehow, now that everybody is vilifying diesel vehicles.

I had the BG letter last week and was called yesterday, 6 times if I recall correctly o_O. No thanks very nicely, no thanks nicely, no thanks, no, I've said no, click.

If you get a smart meter ? They be pre-pared to see a bigger electricity bill. YES ! you can refuse to have one, they make it sound like it is compulsory, or in your best interests, but we all know it's clearly in there interests, so they can make much more money.

Could you please explain to me why after having a Smart meter fitted your bill will increase?
The Smart meter is fitted on exactly the same tariff as the old classic meter so the unit price and standing charge are exactly the same.
