I use Diprobase cream, get from chemist, the wife a Nurse in Cancer care Recommends it to a lot of her Patients since using it I have not suffered from cracked hands

It's kind of reassuring that the dry hands condition is more common than I realised , had problems with this every winter for as long as I can remember, Neutrogena [red-unscented] works well but I'm guilty of not using it regularly enough too.

I tried Snowhead on a recommendation from last years cracked hand thread and it helped a lot - one must have a moisturising regime and daily overnight for the whole season. Mine crack at the knuckles and sides so I emery cloth (sand paper) them down until the skin is soft - repairs easier and quicker. My tuppence!

If you get a bad crack on a finger that is really spoiling your day the remedy I use is a really big blob of Sudocream and cover with a plaster or three overnight. Next morning it'll be pretty much useable, but best to keep the plaster on for a few more hours if you can.
+1 for Neutrogena as a preventative measure.
