Discuss Spur socket installed under integrated appliance in the Electrical Wiring, Theories and Regulations area at ElectriciansForums.net

Looking for some advice on regs for installation of a socket underneath an integrated dishwasher. Recently had a kitchen installed and the electrician has plugged the dishwasher into a metal pattress box (with no grommets fitted) loose on the floor immediately underneath the dishwasher/sink area. At best this seems shoddy, but I am wondering whether it actually meets code/regs. Any advice gratefully received.

It is certainly not good practice to install a metal back box loose on the floor, they are designed to be buried in plaster.

The regulations state that all connections should be electrically and mechanically sound and under no undue strain. the cables in a metal back box will only be held in by the screw connections on the socket which can put excess strain on an electrical connection.
The movement of the cables could cause abrasion of the sheath leading to failure and a short circuit.

The dishwasher could be connected by a trailing socket (wired in flex) and placed under the cabinets.
The use of either a flush or surface back box would require the back box to be fixed to the wall so that the cables are stationary and supported.

Agree with Richard, it sounds like the guy that installed the dishwasher is a bit of a cowboy definitely a dangerous install, best get a Sparky in to sort it out shouldn't cost much, better safe than sorry

Tell me about it, what is it defined scope or full scope or whatever scam they are signed up for:rant::rant:
