The only training that an employer must provide by law is H&S, relevent to the job that you are on - they don't even have to provide first aid courses, which is bloody stupid, if you ask me.
However it does seem unfair on you. Is there not a Union official on site that you can speak to???

On what criteria were the chosen few chosen? As Ken says, they have no obligation to non H&S training but they still need a competent workforce.Maybe pure economics made the decision, it's not just the course and exam fee, it's the lost productivity too.

Do you work by yourself or do you or will you now be working under the supervision of one of these guys who has been sent on the course?

I should imagine they do not have to provide any of the training for any of their staff as I'm sure there are probably many electricians out the qualifications that meet their requirements.

If you haven't been chosen then why not have a quiet, polite word to see if there is a possibility that any more employees will receive this training also. If not, get yourself booked in before you find yourself signing on ;)
