tails install.pngHi all, bit of an awkward one regarding getting some new tails in here. No chance of surface install as firstly look a mess and secondly its communal area. current tails are undersized and loose in cavity of wall skin. No safe zone as such unless a meter cupboard offers a safe zone horizontally? :double ****: SWA? 3rd/top floor flat by the way

nothing wrong with tails in pvc trunking for communal area of rented property, standard set-up.
you could use swa but thats just as ugly and more expensive.
pvc is as tidy as your skills allow IMO
you could use the cavity again if its a short run , a bit naughty but no worse than when you found it

True mate and yes effectively its maintenance as its a straight swap but I like to sleep at night and the chippy that comes to swap the old wooden door for a shiny pvc number will have no clue they are there. They defo wont go with pvc trunking nor metal nor any other such thing as its the first thing you will see everyday. Given cabinet is recessed and approx. 1m from floor tops, CU is 500mm off floor, im half tempted to use swa and drill brick on an 45 angle upwards into bottom of cab and then 90 bend plus about 2 foot of horizontal run. I reckon 4 cleats tops will do it but its not much better than trunking if not worse. strange older cabinet and so nowhere to butt up trunking to as such. I bet face of door to brickwork distance is 25mm tops with a chamfered edge. I could theoretically employ my skill and cut pvc to suite but it will look horrific! We then get onto adding things to the meter cupboard.....yawn! swa will need an adaptable box by rights although it will be 3 core if used and hidden pvc tails would need isolation in cupboard
its also owned and not rented or it would have been lashed in without question! oh and another spanner - there is some sort of leasehold on the flats and the communal areas are not to be touched as such by tenants or owners. The owner is liable for inside flat only and its front door (and bloody tails to the communal area!)

You have got to find a way of hiding you’re handy work. Flats like that cost a lot of money, the owner/shareholders will not be happy with a bodge job in the hallway.

10mm single tails in cavity installed willy nilly with separate 4mm earth and no mech protection. They pass behind two door framesand are installed on a slant from floor to ceiling wise. I cannot guarantee the integrity or condition of them but knowing they exist and a new CU is to be installed, id change them over anyway as rule of thumb. Every board I fit gets shiny tails especially if rewire. Why have a nasty two colour label for sake of not swapping tails on a full new install. Anyway back on track, this isn't a rewire but CU upgrade and earthing. I just think for what it is length and hassle wise, it should be done. The 4mm main earth on PME with no main bonding aint great although no signs of overheating. I wouldn't be connecting a 4mm main earth tail into a split load 17th board but that's me

sorry...in response to Murdoch. thanks for the input though mate

thought about this although it may have to be surface but better to be safe. Ive witnessed a building inspector condemn cables in a cavity before when I was a subby and given its communal entrance and owned/maintained by someone else, I don't want the come back. Going to get it in writing if I go ahead either way whether its cavity install or not. If anybody comes along to drill that wall (although unlikely) for let says cavity insulation and homeowners door is locked, they will have no idea that there are tails in there, swa or not. I wouldn't like to find an swa with a drill bit hole or marks on it regardless of whether its punctured it or not and if I did I would insist on sorting it for future prevention. Ceratinly rather avoid any sort of isolator in meter cupboard whatever happens

again sorry - in response to farm electrics. my web browser is playing up something mad! I click respond to a quote or post and its not adding it as a response or quote!
