Are those Gizmo's still around that sent the metre backwards while using the free leccy?? The one's i remember where 2 16mm singles coming out of an epoxy filled plastic IP type box.... Think they just rammed the two tail into the meter cable connections ....very quickly, ...to minimise the splashing and arching that went with it!! ...lol!!!

I don't know, but I am lead to believe there is an "object" when applied to the metre will send it backwards, obviously not going to happen when the metre is upgraded. So he sends it back, noting the reading, then gets free electricity. He keeps good records so his bill rises slightly each year. He is in the trade btw.

NO ...not in the trade, just a friend of a friend situation really, and this was years ago now, none of these smart meters about then just the spinning wheel type ...lol!!! As far as i can remember he only used the thing weekends, but by the look of the flash marks on the meter cable cover, for a long time...lol!!! I would imagine any meter guy would have known what was going on from those flash marks as he whacked the cables in ....lol!!!

Well it's about time I show you guys how it's done in Africa. Here's an installation I got called to today by the building management company. There's been a recent history of BMS fire alarm episodes where stairwell pressurisation fans for the block of flats above this retail premises has been causing an annoyance. This was the DB for the retail premises.

The DB main breaker looks like it was installed by a complete imbecile who had nothing in his toolbox apart from a hammer and chisel. After speaking to the tenant it turns out that the breaker has had a history of tripping for 'no apparent reason' over the last few months.

As if this world class installation wasn't enough the electrician has been back a few times and eventually remedied the problem with these;

As an added bonus in the second photo you'll get a chance to check out his VFD wiring job.

Now that's what you call crimping!! lol!! Nice cable dressing, excellent safe distribution system of the phases and neutral... what you complaining about Marvo?? lol!!:p

I was pretty shell shocked by now and stupidly assumed I'd seen the worst. I was about to run a local test on the BMS fire detection and I was greeted by this;

Smoke Alarm2.jpg

At that point I'd seen enough. I put the testers and tools away and dragged out the camera.

I've also got some classic pictures of the rest of the DB if anyone's actually interested. Don't worry I completely understand if you've seen enough already.

Oh, I can only watch and learn from the pro's. Once you get past the main impact of the images you need to revisit them and enjoy some of the more subtle nuances and gems. My personal favourite is the labeling of the 'phase rotation' on the toilet extract fan.

NOW, ...That is a classic!!

Reckon that detector was causing someone some problems in the past...lol!! Rather than clean/blow out or replace it, stick a bag over it ... i'll have to remember that one ...lol!!!

There's nothing wrong with it, the electrician 'installed' the bag on the fire detector because the heat or smoke from the DB below was causing it to alarm. After complaints from the other tenants about the noise of the pressurization fans in the stairwells this was his answer to the problem.

There’s hope for me yet.
If I hadn’t got the correct crimper, I’d have got the gas torch out and sweated the lugs. What the hell did he use?

Well at least i was partly right, it was causing someone a problem, now the actual reason for it being a problem, ...is another classic!!! lol!!!
