Right been on the Grolsch most of the afternoon, getting more and more depressed over the state of our industry, I know it's been discussed on another very good thread before, but my blood is boiling and I haven;t got any beer left, Camerbloke has scoffed most of it (only joking Son)

Out of interest I looked up Amendment 3 and the scams response to courses NICEIC, ELECSA and ECA are running a workshop (corporate buzz word) for ÂŁ130 plus, Jesus if that isn't a license to print money then my name ain't Pete999. If you cant read a book then you shouldn't be in this business, oh that includes food, big deal, can't we boycott these blatant scams, it's blinking robbery.

Another thing that made me mad was a thread yesterday, I don't recall who posted it but it was an advertisement for Sparks in London, I think from an Agency for Sparks (must know how to terminate SWA) I mean it isn't rocket science is it FFS?, Going to get my bum smacked for saying this, but don't they teach you how to terminate SWA on these Electrical Trainee courses? I'm glad I'm retiring in the near future, I mean how can you call yourself an Electrician if you cant terminate a SWA, MICC I can understand, it's been out of vogue for a few years, but SWA. They will be asking for "sparks with experience in stripping PVC,PVC twin next"

These Electrical Trainee geezers aren't a new thing, I can remember when I was just out of my time my boss said to can I show this new chap how to build a NSH didn't think much of it at the time until I found out he was an Approved Electrician and I was a mere Electrician, that was 40 years ago and Electrical Trainee willy has his own building business.

Look I'm going now before I get into more trouble, sorry if I have covered old ground, I feel better now, oh found some more beer.

:wheelchair::wheelchair::rant:

Oh by the way I now have a dodgy valve in my heart to add to my woes.

look forward mate lol

That advert is shocking. It says more about the 'sparks' that will apply for that job than it does for the agency company.

You boys may well be retiring just in time. I am 32 and employ guys. God knows what the industry will be like in 10 years. DIs are 10 to a penny (and don't get me wrong - they have their place) but a good old 'all rounder' industrial electrician is hard to find. Couple that with working within a railway environment then gold dust could be mentioned. All I can think of to do is take on apprenticeships to try and fill our skills shortage and once their time is up, treat them right and try and keep hold of them. I feel your pain and I am now going to sit back with a bottle of Hobgoblin and watch this thread explode this evening...

There's domestic installers and there's electricians.Thats the way it is now. When I started out 36 years ago you trained to be an electrician. There was the JIB log book you had to fill in every week, and it had to show you had been trained in just about every aspect of the trade or you didnt pass.
I dont think the DI scheme is necessarily a bad thing, after all domestic installs are about as simple as it gets. It's clear from this forum though that problems arise with testing and fault finding for the short course brigade. You cant learn those skills on a short course because they require an understanding that only comes with experience.

Employers are going to suffer because they won't be able to pass on the extra costs that Decent Electricians will be demanding and that will happen.

Lots of small Electrical companies that take on contract work will also suffer and go pop because once they start projects and realise Rates are rising they won't be able to find the extra money for Decent Electricians.

This as been building up over a number of years now because a large % of employers encouraged the free lance labour market through Agencies and it will come home to roost.

My mate is a buyer for a construction firm
time served joiner, a good hand if not a wee bit slow if I'm being brutally honest ,but I digress
on a recent fitba away day he told me he is putting his tool belt on in 5 years because there will be nobody of a decent skill level left!
i must agree with him tbh.
i live in Scotland no part p/ domestic installer pish up here.
ive come across time served "electricians" that can't do micc/swa/conduit etc
ive come across time served "electricians " that can't wire or fault find as long as their arse point down the way.
wtf do they teach these rockets these days??
i was privileged to be brought up on everything from domestic appliance repair to industrial installation
as were most sparks my age.
a question of my own to the semi trained.
if mrs smith says she has a job for you involving conduit, data, a bit of controls oh and while your here could you fix my outside lights?
do you
a) say no bother I'll sort that for you
b)no I can't that's specialist work you will need somebody else.
the point I'm making is joe public expect you to do everything that is involved in electrical work not just a bit of it

This is why we have only PAYE staff and do our best to look after them.

When I was learning I said yes to everything.

id say nay bother, plastic or metal conduit?

i was dragged up at work on controls and metalic containment.

im tempted to go and live up near some relatives in scotland, seems i have had a more varied training than a lot of supposedly time served sparks.

now i will be classed as a time served because i did 2330 then 2357 through an aprentaship but at the end of it i will have been on the tools just less than 3 years (did months of work experience while i was at college)

Your be demanding top dollar in the not so distance future by the sounds of it and will deserve it

Keep the faith. I innocently signed up for a Electrical Trainee course! A fancy EAL Certificate with a lovely hologram on! I'm now studying C&G 2365.
An apprenticeship would be a bonus but we have to make the best of what we have.
