Switched fuse or fused switch

Hi everyone

Im currently at college doing my 2330...Could anyone explain the difference between a switched fuse and fused switch please?

I'm guessing a fused switch is similar to a Fused connection unit??

just 2 ways of describing the same thing. IMO. basically any combination of a switch and a fuse

but an FCU isn`t switched is it.....but as the name says an SFCU........

You'll find there is actually a difference although effectively they do do the same thing.
A "fused switch" is a switch in series with a fuse in a single housing. The mechanics of the switch are seperate to the fuse.
A "switched fuse" is switch containing a fuse, the fuse (and carrier) physically move when switching occurs.

Domestic examples.....

In a kitchen you will most likely have a 'switched fused spur outlet' to feed the washing machine outlet. This 'switched fused spur outlet' will be fused at 13 amps.

Outside a bathroom you might have a 'switched fused spur outlet' which will isolate the bathroom extraction fan. This will generally be fused at 3 amps.

'Fused outlets' (switched or unswitched) often allow for that part of the circuit to be fused down from the main mcb or fuse. EG.....Lighting can be wired from a 30 amp ring main circuit if it is fused down using a 'switched fuse or non-switched fused spur outlet'.

The switched fused spur outlet also offers double pole isolation.

But I only know about domestic electrics and im still learning. Someone else will be along to inform you better im sure.

Im a geek i absorb info and love science to a degree ive got 20books on quantum theory.. the hardest subject out there as to understand it is to kid yourself you actually do but you can guess my fav programme is 'The Big Bang Theory' i think im the Sheldon :Oo of the family and i seem to be the only one in the family what gets and understands most of the higher level jokes. If the GF watches with me i can bet she says 'what are you laughing at' at least twice.

Also just to highlight that there are SP SFCU and DP SFCU so does that matter well if you have RCD protection and get a call on a Friday afternoon that they cannot reset it because there is a neutral to earth fault only to find 2 hours later that SFCU you switched of is single pole well thats another story..........................................
