Not sure I would be extending sub main cables ... Replacing end to end is the answer.
What does the free holder say ?
More to the point, what does the OP have to say!

Surely that depends on the individual installation?
Bloody big WAGOs I should imagineJust out of curiosity how would you joint the sub mains safely according to regulations?

The contractor is also saying that it is illegal to have other peoples (i.e. the other flats) electrical cables running through our flat. Is this correct? They already run through our flat, and there is no where else to put them given we are lower ground. (its a conservation area so unfortunately can't put them on the outside wall either but thanks for the suggestion). Presumably as long as the trunking is fire rated and access points at junction boxes it is ok?

Hi All,
Thanks very much for the responses. We got fed up with the contractor saying what our electrician was proposing was illegal - it made no sense - as you say jointing and extending (single phase - not 3-phase - sorry) when done correctly must be essential, otherwise how would you renovate in multi-tenanted properties? and the rest. We phoned back our electrician to double check what he was proposing, and then called Building Control to check they were satisfied. They were. Freeholder and leaseholders also are fine with us extending cables all in metal trunking (so no one puts a nail through in the future) and having accessible joint boxes - they know where the boxes will be, and don't want the disruption of us re wiring their flats with armoured cabling. Fire separation maintained between flats and separating floors, and at service penetrations. Needless to say we have taken this section of work out the contract with the contractor... now considering doing the same with the rest of the electrics. Thanks again, appreciate it.
