Presto

Hi everyone, I'm new on here so thought I'd start by asking for your experiences on rated people.com? I've had nothing but grief - total waste of time. Seems the general public are still more than happy for cowboy DIY man to do it for less than half of somebody with proper qualifications like me? The only people making money are in fact ratedpeople.com - keep away I reckon!!

Another Groundhog day also I have just done a feedback survey for Screwfix on Rated people and told them I am not interested in them as they get multile sparks to pay them to quote for 1 job so when one guy is cutting his own throat to get it and 4-5 other guys paying for the privalage of not getting it

They were ringing my phone today .. What is there costs ? As some say don't do it if not worth your while. Do you have to pay monthly/quarterly subscription?

some make it pay, some don't. @ i=p/u, afaik, they do a trial £10 for 3 months, with leads costing £4 upwards. if you buy leads carefully, you can make it pay. i think llandrillo spark uses them a bit.

I get the emails with job alerts although i said i didnt want it after a month trial.

I even quoted a job really cheap just to see what happened and i still didnt get it! There is some gimp in the area who takes every lead and runs round quoting probably half price. Still you can be a busy fool, or just busy. I know what i prefer!

Tried the free trial during January and bought a few leads. Priced some cheap to get me out of the house, still didn't get the jobs. When attending site to give a price some of the routes and ideas the other guys had were quite frightening. I think there are guys doing electrical work who aren't qualified, Rated People should be asking for some qualifications and insurances to register IMO. Only winner out of this is Rated People ( and folk signing on looking for cash in hand ).

The problem is they have an advertising budget plus they pay Google to be first spot on the search next to service magic although I do get people asking me about them and I say it only drives down standards and you get what you pay for

exactly. bloody parasites. if customers didn't use them, they'd be searching for a local spark who'd probably be able to give testimonials of previous work done in the local community instead of feeding these leeches.

The advertising of these parasites conveys the impression you'll get a good job, but if they allow anyone who will pay them to quote, perhaps ultimately it will be their undoing, when it is more that you are guaranteed a cheap and shoddy job if you take one of the cheap quotes. Perhaps some of these sites should be on Rogue Trader?

Service Magic - they are the experts at ripping us tradesmen off. None of the leads I purchased from them even existed hence I told them to poke it. They should all also do a feedback area for the customers, that way we can see who wastes people's time. I drove 20 miles to quote for a job the other day - got an email 3 days later to say he had decided to use his brother-in-law - I was the only one that purchased the lead so my point is why put your details on rated people when you had no intention of using the poor sod (me) who purchased your details? And, I couldn't get a credit because I had actually quoted and when rated people asked the customer he confirmed I had quoted so complete waste of £11 + vat.

You can bet their T&Cs are watertight if someone gets injured from a so called electrician but it would take a test case to prove that they have legal obligation to ensure the person they send to quote for the job is qualified to do it me thinks they will not get away with its not our problem as they are telling the customer that we will send 5 electricians to quote for the job.

Also got a call one time when a guy said I can get a CU for £250 can you do any better I replied well good for you but I am surprised you have phoned me I don't do cowboy jobs

Service Magic are are pure sales but as our market is fully saturated then there are plenty of mugs trying to break into the industry that are gullable. They were calling me and sending me jobs to quote for 30 miles outside Edinburgh but for me its only worthwhile to do Edinburgh and the close surrounding area

paying money to 1 person in order to just be able to bid on a job for another person ?
**** , you must be desperate to buy into that nonsense lol.

What i cant understand is why anyone with any brain cells would contact rated people rather than checking out a few local companies?

I think i answered my own question actually after meeting a couple of rated people customers....

anyone who relies on these website to hire workers will be a total chump to work for lol.

I went to my first rated people lead the other day. Not even gonna provide a quote for it.
Was to install a fire alarm system at a dental surgery. I asked to see the distribution board to puzzled looks.
"Why would you want to see that ?"
to check bonding is in place and see where I will be taking my power circuit from.
"Well the other guys didn't ask."
Which other guys ?
"well we have had 2 quotes already"

Unreal !

Turns out their DB is in the basement which is a bar, and inaccessible during the day.
Oh and the job needs to be done evenings and weekends to avoid disturbing the patients.
Oh and we are in a recession and the dentists wife has just had a baby so can i keep it cheap.
Oh and the fire officers report says an L3 system but we want it cheap so the other guys have quoted for an L4 system.
Oh and its a listed building so you cant chase the walls or damage any skirting, dado or coving.

The only other leads in my area in the last 2 weeks have been to change single light fittings in houses.
Definitely giving it the heave before the free trial even ends I reckon.

I subcontract for a maintenance company in london, and the bulk of our work is through rated people. we normally get most jobs at £65 + vat for first hour, plus £45 + vat for any additional hours.

Horses for courses I guess ;0))

Bottom line is the punters dont have to pay a thing. Your the guy who ends up out of pocket.
4 bedroom property requires full re wire. Budget, under £1000. Price for lead £35.
And somebody is gonna do it.
But not me boys, I have a little bit more self respect, and hope I will never be that desperate.

Yep totally agree I just do small electrical repairs mainly for rented properties and it worth it to me and it suits my business thing is these companies can be started by a kid in a bedroom and if it fails then no big deal but if it flies then millionare time. Still get one phone call everyother week by some middleman company I am lucky because I spot the sales pitch in the first sentance

Yep its called experience OT. Theres no substitute for it.

I have used service magic before what I found was a load of time wasters eg quote fot rewire in 2 years time etc I got some great jobs of there and went in higher to allow for timewasters, found I won 80% of the REAL jobs. The timewasters I just sent a email with list of reasons why they were not real jobs I got 4 out of 5 refunded.

look at this job just posted , one of the crap wtf ones lol

Hi i am looking to buy a flat which i would like the electrics checked out. I would like to know the following. 1) can someone come and test it and tell me whats needed - will there be a cost? 2) Approx cost for a 3 bed, 1 kitchen, 1 hall, 1 bathroom and 1 living room. I wont hold you to it but want to understand indicative costs for basic to entire re wire 3) if i buy flat and you get the job will you refund / deposit the cost i paid for the inspection Please feel free to give me any more info that could be useful Looking for a few quotes and would love someone to tell me they can quote for free :) as it would also be a better chance of you getting the job. Thanks David

Cheeky git wanting a refund for work already done if he buys the flat!! what planet are these people on. be charging you for a cup of tea next!!

I had a customer once who said I will hold you to that price and I said well I will hold you to the job well started the job wife went out then came bag since you are here I bought 2 lights for the lounge can you put them up yep no probs £30 on the bill yep it cuts both ways

suppose someone will be desperate enough to give it a pop. Are you getting any work through them?

Yeah mate can be pretty good, if your first to buy keep an eye out for decent ones and ignore ones like above ,get sent about 15 jobs a day from a 45 mile radius

Not too bad then mate. im down ayrshire way had a look on the site a week or so back and it had a few interesting ones that caught my eye. suprising how many people use the site

paying 30 quid to tell someone theyre clueless would severely defeat the purpose mate haha :)

£30.00 x 7 sparks = £210.00+VAT......then "changed-me-mind" and no jobs to do.......there's middlemen springing up everywhere from getting a job to selling your car to buying insurance......everybody wants to get between you and what you want to do and take at least a fee if not a % as well.....

how can they justify charging what they do when they are basically just an advertising board......even dum free has ads posted on it with people looking for work to be done.....and a lot of them must have accidentally ingested questionable substances first....

yep your right if its not agencies screwing the rate down its companies advertising work...and wanting paid for it even though your not garaunteed it.
its a means to an end i suppose

To be honest I don't find it that bad , they only let 3 tradesmen buy the 1 lead fair enough 2 will be out of pocket , the amount of leads I'm sent daily is unreal 10-15 per day , my phone doesn't ring half as much daily from other advertising sources , key is to only buy the lead if your first to buy , as 90% of the jobs I buy I end up doing that day or atleast secure the job
