RCD trip out

I've been called to a job for a friend as his swimming pool pump keep tripping the RCD, it took me a while to work out how the other electrician had wired it but of what I see, it's a bit of a mess. I'll do my best to explain for the pool I can see 3 MCB's used 1st is a 6A type b in to a time clock in 1.5mm2 then that goes into a contactor then there is a 32A type c in 6mm2 that goes into the contactor then SWA to the pool. Then the last one is a 10A type c in 1.5mm2 that goes to a switch then in SWA to the pool to the plug where the pump plugs into, this is when the RCD trips. I've tested the cables and they are, R1-R2 1.32ohms insulation resistance is all around 100Mohms. Ze is 0.19ohms Zs is 1.21ohms PFC is 1.22KA and the RCD trips within the permitted times, the pump is PSH mini.2 50m 0.37KW. I've never worked with swimming pools before it's a bit out my comfit zone I'm just trying to help a friend. Also the pump works fine for hours when pugged into another RCD protected circuit.

Simon I'm confused what do you mean R1-R2 is 1.32 ohms, are you referong to the resistance of the line and cpc r1 r2?

If you took the rcd out and replaced it with a main switch would it work im thinking yes as im sure ive been shown this but I wouldnt fancy taking a dip just to be safe that im not gonna be disappearing .


This might sound utterly stupid as if you did the above im thinking something like this could happen, but then again it might not as as I say I have been shown this method for getting out of a dilema


a.you will 100 percent get a shock as electricity and water do not mix and seeing as the rcd keeps tripping there is obviously a leakage between live and neutral and well if it leaks into the water from the head of the pump .... Even if you did not go into the water but somehow touched where it was leaking you would just keep getting a shock until u died of the switch cut out and then you dies


b.no although there is a leakage it would not go into the water but would instead cause a fire as the mainswitch would take a lot longer to cut out and the leakage would just keep leaking and then more then likely cause a fire

It was a stupid post i should of started my own thread asking, if you leave a consumer unit with its rcd taken out and replaced with a main switch so that basically you could go home as it was the second job, 10 hours into the day with a 2hr drive back. Is that ok as i was shown this method, straight away i was thinking hang on surely that means these guys are more likely to get a shock as theres clearly fault and now there is no point .4 trip out protection. I shouldn't question what im shown as really i should be shown right but its in my nature to make sure that it is as my gut feeling was thats a bit cowboy but i could be wrong and it could be fine after all if it wasnt a 17th eddition board before then it would be no worse ?

well an mcb is only good at detecting an overload or short circuit, it will not detect a fault between neutral and earth
