Discuss RCD trip out in the UK Electrical Forum area at ElectriciansForums.net

You were obviously not here when lofty was, he was asking all these genuine questions which seemed to make this lot think he was taking the the wined up and taking the ****, then he got banned lol was a bit gutted at the time as i wasnt lol and the more i tried to explain that the worse it got. I went into groundworks after that (digging holes) and then that went ---- up so I returned as a mate with the intention of trying to get the nvq done this year (if i can the scope of work it requires) at the moment its boards and bonding only and thats what i think these guys specialise in (at least i know how to bond now, why one of you couldnt tell me last time ill never no

Will keep persevering tho

Started writing that before the other posts if it comes across funny. Its all good I can handle the banter m8 it just nice when you feel you can asking something the way you see it and then you can get an answer to the way you put it that you understand and follow. I thought it was hilarious last time theres me asking all these questions and a lot of people are getting really ****ed of with them. I was enjoying defending myself but then all of a sudden I couldn't log in.

So you are the reincarnation of Lofty!

Fire away !!!!!!

ok mate here you go

If you leave a 17th eddition consumer unit with its rcd taken out and replaced with a main switch so that basically you now have 2 main switches side by side one where it always is and the other where the rcd went so it stopped tripping and you could go home as it was the second job of the day, 10 hours into the day with a 2hr drive back. Is that ok as i was shown this method, straight away i was thinking hang on surely that means these guys are more likely to get a shock as theres clearly fault and now there is no point .4 trip out protection. I shouldn't question what im shown as really i should be shown right but its in my nature to make sure that it is as my gut feeling was thats a bit cowboy it just didnt look right but i could be wrong and it could be fine after all if it wasnt a 17th eddition board before then it would be no worse except and this is only how i see it through what ive been told that you would be electrocuted for 5 seconds if it was a rewireable 3036 fuse but im guess the main switch would take more then that

In my opinion no it is not. You've been called out (well obviously not you personally but the bloke who is responsible) to fix a problem and you have not done so. What I'd do is leave the RCD in place, find the faulty circuit and temporarily disconnect it until I had the time to go back to trace and eliminate the fault.

Cheers trev he has been doing it for 40 years so I shouldnt be questioning him really but he will never no so no harm done.

I disagree with you on this. I think it is very important to ask questions if you are not sure. Its the only way to learn.

Well I haven't been banned yet so it looks promising. Hopefully ur gonna take me under your wing and answer my questions no mater how confusing or annoying they are and others will follow suit. We're have to see as I don't think others see me a a legend lol but we're wait and see. All I wanna be is a knowledgeable sparks no a nos a little

personally in this case I would clamp it to check for earth leakage.

it might not be a fault on the wiring but a couple circuits leaking to earth.

if this was tripping the rcd I would swap it for a mainswitch for the duration of the test to find which circuit is at fault.

a house should always have rcd protection because I doubt they would have earthed containment from board to fitting or be more than 50mm in the wall
