Ive broken the front cover to the consumer unit

HI guys

Ive accidently broken the consumer unit in the empty property im working in at the moment. I took the cover off of the Memra 2000 Ad board having isolated all the breakers, rcd's and main switch then I took the main fuse out (yes Ive taken the main fuse out before with out doing so and it was just a little bit scary with all the sparks and crackling noises)

Being a bit heavy handed and just rushing I guess Ive gone and broken the front cover so that it wont screw up tight at all.

I cant say that taping it on would be a good look, and I cant see that being acceptable at all. I also wouldnt want to do that but My dilema is this. I not sure the company has plans to do a board change even tho I have added a new kitchen ring to the old board board. additional sockets on both the up and down stairs RFS's etc. I have adivised that they have a board change to bring it up to current regs (17th eddition board) as I have made alterations and additions that need to comply with BS7671. Ive been told there going to look into it, but if it is allowed I guess they will just try and put the new kitchen ring on a rcbo and the existing up and downstairs rings both with additional sockets added to them on a rcbo as well as this will comply and allow them to keep costs down.

What can I do if they go for this option as I cant leave this cover like it is, its just waiting to fall of exposing all the live parts etc, also the earth bar inside this cosumer unit is a bit loose imo.

Don't put others at risk as you've admitted you were heavy handed.

Sorry to be blunt but you broke it so you replace it.

New CU less than £100.

use self tapping screws bigger than the machined thread lugs that you've stripped in the casing to hold the lid on.

Get a replacement board cover, usually need to buy the empty board as a unit.

I think two ppl are posting on this name, reading back through the threads, the formulation of sentence and grammer changes... you know from a more mature person writing one min to a younster the next. Anyone else noticed.

Back on track bigger screws will get you out of jail (no pun intended) ive seen 6inch decking screws all the way through to plugs in the board to keep the lid on lol...it was effective not pretty tho

Nothing, it's a good idea - i just didn't think of it first which annoyed me when it's so simple lol

To the O.P, admit to the customer that you may have broken the cover and you are prepared to pay towards the total cost of fitting a new one as it now must have one.

Either you pay for the C.U and they pay labour or the other way around.

Replacement cover for Memera board would be difficult to find. Adapting the screws is your best bet

Depends whether he's stripped the threads or broken the threaded flange off the base. If it's the latter, then bigger screws won't help.

Im gonna go with engineer 54 on this one. As I say theres no one living there, we are renovatting it if you will and then when its all done I guess the housing association moves someone in.


I was right about the RCBOS though? If they are used to look after the new kitchen ring and up and down stairs rings that have had work done on them it will save them the expense of a board changebut still make what ive done comply with regs.

well I had to put in a fused spur and tripple pole isolater and then a transformer for a bathroom fan. I didnt want to surface mounth it so set about drawing and the wall whewre the cbles are gonna go etc. having done that i took out my drill and 6mm drill bit put a bit of tape on it to se the depth and began drilliing little holes all along my pencil lines. I then grabbed my sds and chopped it out. It was all looking ok untill I checked the other side of the wall as I had craked some of it on the otherside. maybee I should have used my hand chisel instead of the sds for work like this.

having chased everything out and ran the cables I thought I would save a bit of time on second fix and terminate the fused spur tripple pole isolator and transformer. It has damned on me however that the cables and oval conduit are yet to be filled/plastered so in thory im gonna have to un terminate it all as all the plasters just gonna fall behind the patress box/transformer and possible through the holes that were pumched out to feed the cables through. I could have deffo done with another sparky on site to ask me what the hell I was doing that day but at least im learning fast.

It is a shame that you are attempting to learn the trade unsupervised in other peoples' homes. If you need to second fix before the plasterers have been, then simply fill a couple of inches above the backbox you've installed. Nothing anyone else does later on will affect you that way.
